The Culture of Jaguar Basketball

Our Mission

The Rock Canyon High School Girls Basketball Program strives to develop our players and managers into successful people on and off the court. We hope to accomplish this by focusing on the following traits: Servanthood, Accountability, Humility, Appreciation, Passion, Unity and Resilience. Our players will be pushed to expand their comfort zone by being challenged and learning from each other daily.  We want our players to have a great experience in our program and learn to be great people on and off the court.

The Jaguar Way

(our Values)

  • Humility- Know who we are; strengths & weaknesses
  • Passion- Do not be lukewarm; commit to excellence
  • Appreciation- Learn from every circumstance
  • Servanthood- Make your teammates better; lead by giving
  • Unity- Team first; do not divide our house
  • Accountability- What can I do to make this situation better?
  • Resilience- Successfully adapt to any situation

The Chase

(Our Goal):

5 on the Floor as one

This is the focus of all of our program’s actions, and to maintain this goal for an entire game, and especially an entire season, it requires the focus of more than just the players who are in the game.  It requires the focus of all players, and coaches.

Non-Negotiables:

PROGRAM before Individual

DEFENSE before offense

E + R = O

(Event + Reaction = Outcome)

3 Types of reactions:

1. Irrational- Negative focus, born of laziness, resistant to productive discomfort. “Why are we doing this stupid drill?”

  1. Survival- Desire to take the path of least resistance.  Focuses on comfort & convenience, instead of getting better.  “This workout sucks.  When will it be over?  Or even “Just get through it.”
  2. Purposeful- Embraces productive discomfort & wants to compete to their utmost.

The first 2 reactions are “below the line” meaning they are impulsive, on autopilot, and resistant.  The 3rd reaction is “above the line.” It’s intentional, purposeful, and skillful.

How do we consistently make Above-the-line decisions?

  • Choose to be Above the Line (it takes intent)
  • Eliminate BCD (blaming, complaining & defensiveness)

Program Wide Absolutes:

Absolutes:

  1. Relentless Competitive Effort
  2. Control what you control
  3. Communicate relentlessly

Offensively:

  1. Make layups and free throws
  2. Controlled paint touches
  3. Play off of 2 feet

Defense:

  1. Defend without fouling
  2. Guard your yard
  3. Rebound no matter your size

Where
Majority of teams will practice at Rock Canyon High School. Games will be at various high schools in the Metro area. Many games will also be at the Gold Crown Fieldhouse on Alameda and Sheridan.

Practices
Each team will have 2 practices a week usually 7pm – 8:30pm. Practice could be any day Monday through Friday. No practices on weekends. If your child makes a team, practices will begin the week after Fall Break.

Games
Regular season games will be on Sundays only. You will always play a doubleheader. Some games may be back to back, other times there will be an hour break between games. Games are in all areas of the Front Range, thus requiring some travel. Most games will be at the Gold Crown Fieldhouse, others at high schools in the metro area. Some games could be north end of town, such as The Courts, some games could be south of town. Schedules for regular season are posted around Holiday Season. Tournament days may vary.

Gold Crown Information

For additional information on The Gold Crown Foundation, please follow this link. The league that we play in is the Competitive Basketball feeder program.

Tryout Information

  • One of the goals of Gold Crown is to be viewed as a feeder program for the respective high school that your daughter is going to attend. Most high schools in Douglas County do have Gold Crown programs. If your daughter is not currently in the Rock Canyon area, we encourage you to inquire with their high school to see if there is a Gold Crown feeder program associated with your school. Though we do allow anyone to tryout for our program, we do feel it is important to get into the feeder program associated with the high school they will eventually attend. If you do not plan to attend RCHS, please consider not trying out for our program.
  • Each player will be evaluated for 180 minutes across 2 days by the varsity program coaches. Coach Holloway and his staff will evaluate the girls. Coaches will be evaluating skills, team-work and general attitude.
  • All player decisions will be made by the Varsity program. Previous year coaches will not participate in the evaluation process. The varsity coaches will place your child on a team where they feel they will be the most successful.
  • Decisions are typically made within 72 hours (excluding weekends) and will be communicated electronically. However, more time may be required – we request patience and ask you not to reach out unless it has been 4 days since tryouts have concluded and no information is posted.
  • Please know that this is a competitive program, and there may be players cut. We would love to keep every player that tried out, but with limited gym time for all the teams we do have to make the tough decision to cut some players.
  • For our girls program, we may combine some grade levels in order to form teams. For example, if we don’t have ten 8th graders tryout, we may move up some 7th graders to play at the 8th grade level. We want every girl possible to play, so we may have situations where younger girls play up in order to form teams. If we do combine teams, we will choose silver or gold level based on the skill level of the team.

Who coaches the teams?

Our program is entirely run by volunteers. The majority of our coaches are parents of a player on the team. Using volunteers is how we keep the cost at a very reasonable rate.

What if our kids play other sports, or club basketball?

We encourage kids to play as many sports as they can. We believe that kids should try to experience as many sports as they can to find what they love. It is inevitable that there will be conflicts if your child plays other sports. The key is to communicate with your coach to establish expectations. Please understand that playing time could be impacted if your child is unable to make practices.

Is playing time equal?
For the younger grades, playing time will be as equal as it is deserved. Though it is a competitive league, we view this as a development program. Every kid will play, but in the final quarter teams will be directed to play to win. Winning is important, but not more important than developing a pipeline of talent for our varsity programs.
